"Tradition is not the worship of ashes, but the preservation of fire."

Each session lasts about one hour and is broken down to three phases: Basics, or "Kihon; Sparring or "Kumite"; and finally Form, or "Kata".

Basics - "Kihon"
Basics, or "Kihon" in Japanese are derived from individual moves of from training or "Katas" in Japanese. These comprise of punching, kicking, blocking, and stances. In "Kihon" training individual moves are further broken down - identifying key body parts, center-of-gravity, focus points and so forth. Individual moves are then drilled in order to perfect each move to achieve maximum speed and power.;

Sparring - "Kumite"
Sparring, or "Kumite" in Japanese, is actually using the techniques mastered in "Kihon" with an opponent. Only black belts and above are allowed to free-spar; those who are still lower-rank participate in regimented and controlled sparring in which an instructor controls the interactions.

Form - "Kata"
Form training, or "Kata" in Japanese, is a series of basic moves, or "Kihon," done in choreographed fashion. There are 25 Katas in all.
